What’s it like living in a border town?
Move 500m and they speak an entirely different language, have different laws and culture. I’m fascinated.
We don’t really have extreme examples in the UK as English prevails as the main language, keeping everything familiar.
Maybe that’s the issue. If we spoke an entirely different language in different parts of the UK (and I know some do) we might respect or even expect cultural differences more. Would it make it easier?
Is it like the UK/US? We speak the same language but we don’t, not at all.
There really is much more difference than it seems. Everywhere. Yet we seek the familiar, the similarities. What is it about being the ‘same’ that makes us feel safe? Surely it’s just an illusion.
Just a thought. More later. Happy Wednesday.
